Joan Miró Spanish, 18931983 Personages with Stars 1933 Oil on canvas 196.3 x 247.9 cm Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Maurice E. Culberg, 1952.512 © 1995 Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York / ADAGP, Paris Miró’s images are whimsical and light-hearted. This is not a picture of the real world, but a dream world that is full of fantastic creatures with some human elements. Figures with outstretched arms are playing and dancing, as if celebrating life on a grand scale. Where are the stars in the painting? How many star forms can you find? Miró created this painting as one of four designs for wall hangings known as tapestries. The tapestries were to have been woven at the famous French Aubusson tapestry works.
